Name: Lilianne Eden Merteuil

Born: June 1190 -- France

Died: November 1212 -- France

Status: Immortal

Primary weapon: Katana

Secondary weapon: Broadsword

Also possesses a knowledge of many weapons, some traditional such as nunchucks, rapiers and morningstars and modern firearms as well.

Throughout her whole life, Lili's striking, breathtakingly beautiful looks have served to her advantage, whether she wanted them to or not. She is a statuesque, graceful 5' 9" and is willowy and slender, though not without considerable feminine curves. Her long, thick champagne blond hair is usually loose over her shoulders, straight or curly depending on her preferences. Though all the features of her face, from her aquiline nose to her full lips, are lovely, classically beautiful as well as unique, it is her eyes that have the capability of rendering some speechless. Large and blue, they are framed by a thick curtain of long lashes and fluctuate from aqua to lavender depending on her many moods. No matter what state of mind Lili is in, her eyes always contain a hint of melancholy and pensiveness. She doesn't easily smile in earnest, but on the occasion that she does, it is brilliant and seductive.

Lili’s personality has evolved greatly though all the tumult in her long, oftentimes traumatic, life. Currently, it is very rare that she reveals her true colors to anyone. The façade that Lili puts on is that of a cordial, though somewhat aloof woman. When necessary, she is quite the flirt and is a flawless seductress. Extremely intelligent, she possesses a keen understanding of subtleties and textures in the events and relationships around her. Her sense of humor is very quirky, dry, and sarcastic, and she has a rapid wit. With her enemies, she can be ruthless and cold. In spite of the tough façade that she puts on, Lili is much more fragile that she lets on inside, and keeps her true self hidden away in fear of becoming vulnerable. Very few know that, in spite of the fact that she has used and discarded men as needed at times, Lili is a true romantic at heart.

She is skilled in a great deal of things. Not only is she a force to be reckoned with when it comes to combat and sword fighting, she keeps in shape by doing extensive dance as well as martial arts training. She has a stunning voice and plays the guitar and piano proficiently. Though she rarely performs nowadays, her singing is a catharsis for her. Her poetry is the same, as well as many paintings and drawings. From a good amount of time spent with gypsies and also various other sources, she has a knowledge and understanding of white and black magicks. When necessary, Lili is an adept Wiccan. Deceptively slender and lovely, she is often underestimated, which is unfortunate for the countless immortals she has beheaded. Lili has earned herself a name as one of the most dangerous and able fighters alive today.

Secretly adopted into great privilege to a French nobleman in the twelfth century, Lili wanted for nothing in her childhood. The youngest by far in a family of many children, she still felt alone and isolated amongst all the luxury and riches. Emotions were not permitted in this dignified household, so she never truly connected with her parents and all of her siblings. Though she was privy to all of the luxuries of the times, and the best education possible, Lili still envied the servants and how free they seemed to her.

By the time she reached her early teens, Lili not only possessed a shrewd understanding of the world and the apparently bleak place a woman held in it, she was also already a great beauty, renowned throughout France due to rumor and word of mouth. Thanks to her detached parents, wanting only to increase their excessive wealth, there were dozens of suitors clamoring for her hand and for a share in her family fortune. All of them were greedy, old, and undesirable. When Lili was finally betrothed to an infamously cruel duke who was more than twice her age, something inside her snapped.

Only fifteen at the time, she simply took off through the vast grounds surrounding the grand estate. She did not know where she was going, or what she could possibly do with herself, but she knew she wanted out. She’d been wandering in the woods for days without being able to fend for herself when, as she was on the verge of starvation and exhaustion, a stable boy that she’d never noticed amidst all of the slaves on the estate took her in. His name was Mathieu, and he lived in a simple cabin just on the border of the estate with his poor but kind family. Taking her in, no questions were asked and she was fed and cared for by them. Lili was an intensely spoiled, ungrateful girl, however, and no matter how kind these people were, she balked at their lack of education and naivete, and resented the simple surroundings she had to live in. However, she could not go back.

One day, as she was doing much-detested work in the field, she threw a fit of frustration, yelling at Mathieu for getting her into this. He was not insulted and calmed her down, confessing that he loved her. Shocked, as nobody had ever told her this before, Lili raged out at him and left once again. Stronger by now, and slightly more disciplined from the work she had almost gotten used to doing, Lili was halfway to Paris when she realized what she was turning her back on. She rushed back to the estate, but she was just half a mile from it when she saw that all that was left of it was a huge blaze, burning like a funeral pyre. Everyone – her family, Mathieu, his family – was dead. She saw an ominous, black carriage ride away, but in her emotional state, she did not make anything of this.

Using the money she had and her looks and charms, Lili made her way into Paris. There was no work for her there, and nothing she was skilled to do, despite her sophistication and education. After getting food and a tiny apartment, Lili found herself broke and miserable. Still, she kept telling herself, it was better than being a captive to a cruel, greedy old man.

The times were difficult for her, though, and by the time Lili was seventeen she found herself working as a prostitute. It was degrading and low, but she knew there was nowhere else she could turn. Occasionally turning to the bottle in order to make herself forget the worst of the nights, when her clients were hideous or drunk or violent or all three, she thought she could get no lower and sought death.

A group of knights came into the brothel one night. Thinking they would be good pay, Lili succeeded in charming and enticing all of them. They agreed she was good company and took her outside with them. The minute one of them had her out on the street, the rest of the group went inside and slayed the prostitutes and the pimps, screaming something about a mission for God. These men were Knights Templar.

Lili was spared, they told her, because they thought she could be saved. They told her about their cause in detail, and about the Crusades, and put her in a convent against her will. She felt lonely and trapped there, and her wild, tempestuous spirit had no place among the complacent, celibate nuns. One of the priests, however, took a special interest in her. They became close friends and confidantes. For some reason that Lili did not understand, he began to teach her to fight and to use a sword. Lili could not understand why a woman like herself needed to learn such things that were always left to men, but she grew to love it and to look forward to every lesson.

By the time she was nineteen, Lili was a deft swordswoman in her own right. She was eager to leave the convent and confessed this to the priest. For reasons she could not understand at the time, he put her into a set of armor and told her to meet in a certain valley. She protested at first, but then he told her she was being sent off into the Crusades.

Terrified at first, Lili grew intrigued by the idea and went. Nobody realized she was a woman, as she kept herself very well disguised and isolated, and she battled well, releasing years of frustration and helplessness on the enemies. In 1212, however, her luck ran out and she suffered a gruesome injury. In the throes of death, she was dragged off of the battlefield by her fellow fighters who had come to respect her greatly. As they tried to help her, her helmet and armor were removed and it was revealed that she was a woman.

Betrayed and outraged, in the instants before she died, these knights cursed her and her soul. Reviving on an empty battlefield full of dead bodies, Lili was terrified and hysterical. Her wounds were gone and she was fully awake. Thinking that the curse had worked and that her soul was doomed for all eternity, Lili somehow found her way back to the convent.

The priest was waiting for her, and was not the least bit surprised. His name was Darius, he was an immortal like her, and he told Lili all about what she was. The two of them stayed together for years, and he furthered her training until she exceeded him in her combat and sword skills. He taught her humility, courage, and many other things as well. While he was teaching her, the two traveled around. He took her all around Europe, and showed her exotic, far off places. Asia, Russia, the Middle East, and Africa were all among places they visited and learned about. However, the minute Lili stepped into Ireland and Scotland, she felt she was home. Along with Darius, the two stayed in that area until 1300.

By this time, Lili was adept in many forms of martial arts and could best any man or woman, mortal or immortal, in a sword fight. With Darius’ instruction, she now flawlessly spoke French, Latin, Spanish, English, Gaelic, Mandarin, and Russian. Now a worldly and wise woman, a far cry from the spoiled heiress or depressed prostitute of years past, Lili was content just to stay in Scotland with Darius. Much to her surprise and disappointment, however, one day Darius told her that it was time for him to leave and go back home. She pleaded against him, afraid of being on her own, but he assured her that there was nothing more that he could teach her.

So Lili was on her own. For fifty years, she moved amongst various Celtic clans, leaving as soon as her lack of aging became apparent. In the area and beyond it, she became legendary as the different clans compared their stories of the mysterious, charismatic woman warrior that blazed through them, settling down for never more than a couple of years at a time, occasionally going off to do battle with another stranger passing through. She always won.

By 1435, Lili had had many Quickenings and experiences. Deciding it was time to move on, she left the area and traveled throughout Europe, doing much of the same things. In many of the places where she settled down, her engaging personality and incomparably stunning looks won her many suitors and friends. She never found love, however, or a true confidant, though she had a good deal of fun trysts and an assortment of platonic friends. Though she did not go out of her way to make enemies, Lili never turned down a challenge and became an immortal force to be reckoned with as her impressive head count and reputation grew.

In Spain, Lili spent years with a band of gypsies and felt almost as good with them as she had with the Celts. Because there were considerable magics practiced, her seeming agelessness was not so evident nor important to them. In addition, she learned some witchcraft that she continued practicing to this day. Forming some close bonds with the gypsies, Lili stayed until 1480. One of the people there was a woman named Amanda. Also an immortal, slightly older than Lili, the two became fast friends. For the first time since Darius, Lili felt herself forming a true bond with someone. Amanda taught her many things, and, capitalizing on Lili’s natural wiles and cunning, taught her the art of thievery which has since come in handy to her repeatedly.

However, both of them had wanderlust inside them, and at the end of the fifteenth century, both Lili and Amanda left the gypsies. Together, they traveled to the Orient, spending a longer time there than Lili ever had before. She increased her discipline and added to her already considerable martial arts repertoire. It was here, from her Sensei Zheoung Li, a fellow immortal, that she received the katana which she owns to this day. It was forged thousands of years before her birth, he told her, and possessed the spirit and power of all the great warriors who had fought with it before.

Amanda left the Orient in 1531. Lili stayed on for several years after that, perfecting her knowledge. One day, she was lured away by an immortal who sought a fight. He was younger than she, and no match for her when it came to combat, and it was an easy Quickening for her. Upon her return to her dojo, she found Zheoung Li beheaded. Angered and saddened, she fled to Russia, vowing to avenge him as soon as she found out who the cowardly killer was.

She traveled through Russia for ten years, sometimes with nomads, sometimes settling down, whether in privileged families or in humble villages. One of the families she stayed with reminded her greatly of Mathieu’s, back in France all those years ago. Trying to recapture the love she had foolishly thrown away, she started a relationship with a young man named Nikolai. Though not an immortal and just twenty-five years old, he was wise and understanding, and Lili felt comforted by him, her wild nature temporarily tamed. She also became close friends with his sister, Marina, and was happy there for five years.

For no real reason, Marina was tragically killed by some drunkards from the village who mugged her as she was walking back home. Lili and Nikolai came after them. He was killed by them as well. Enraged, Lili murdered them all within seconds and thus was banished from the village. One of the men in the group that killed Marina and Nikolai was an immortal named Alexander. He was ancient, thousands of years older than Lili, and a cruel and heartless man.

Tracking him for three years, Lili finally caught up with Alexander in Italy. They fought, and though he was older and more experienced by far, Lili triumphed and got the valuable Quickening – and her revenge. Having seemingly nothing useful to do with her time, Lili decided to stay in Europe. She traveled throughout all of it, making her way down to India. There, using her intelligence and looks, she became the prized harem of an unbelievably wealthy sultan. Soon, however, she was more than just that. Though she was a woman, because of her intelligence and creativity she became his close confidante and advisor. It was all just a good time for her and she was content to simply enjoy the riches and easy life for several years.

Lili ended up staying in India with the sultan for seven years. She started a relationship with one of his slaves, who had been brought over from France. Their common origin brought the two together, and then Lili saw that he was a pre-immortal. His name was Lucien and they carried on their affair for five of the seven years she was in India. When the sultan found out, he was furious and ordered them both killed. They revived, of course, and escaped, fleeing to Germany.

Lucien, now an immortal, was trained by Lili – and trained well. They lived peacefully for fifteen years, until Lili found him one day, mysteriously beheaded. Grieving the loss of yet another love, she wandered around Europe again for nine years, having many meaningless dalliances and flings with many men, some mortal, some immortal. What with all the anger inside of her, a great number of immortals lost their heads to Lili during this time.

It was now 1581. To ease her ennui, Lili caught a boat and traveled to Africa. She explored many exotic lands and learned of new things. There was enough in Africa to keep her interested for a good forty-five years. In 1626, she began traveling back up north, spending a few years each in Morocco, Turkey, and Greece.

In 1630, Lili met Duncan MacLeod for the first time in Italy. The two instantly bonded and formed and intense, fast relationship. Unlike with any of the other men in her life, like Mathieu, Nikolai, and Lucien, she felt truly secure and content with Duncan in her life. Though never one for sentimentality and romance, because of all the horror she’d seen and pain she’d been through, Lili still felt that Duncan was her soul mate. She knew that he was, and remains to this day, the love of her life.

He was a young immortal then, however, and was restless and eager to experience all there was in life. In 1683, he left her to begin wandering. She was truly brokenhearted, like she’d never been in her life, and traveled around Europe again, trying to fill the void that Duncan had left.

It was futile, though, and in 1715, Lili was tired of life and needed something to give her a reason for being. She went back to France, finding it much changed. Returning to Darius and the convent, she stayed there peacefully for four years, spiritually healing. It felt good to be back with her first teacher, and Lili reached a certain degree of contentment, though not the pure peace she had felt with Duncan.

While she was there, the oldest immortal showed up – Methos. The two understood each other and struck up a very close friendship, at times bordering on romance, but never crossing the line. The two of them left Darius in 1719, and Methos took Lili to the Americas.

Together, they traveled through the frontier until 1730, sometimes posing as a married couple and learning the ways of the new world. Soon, though, he confessed to her of his growing infatuation and need to further their relationship. Though they were very close, Lili regretfully turned him down. Her heart, it seemed, now belonged to Duncan MacLeod, whether he wanted it or not. Methos understood, and the two parted amicably.

While he went back to Europe, Lili stayed in California. She remembered what Amanda had taught her and joined a gang of robbers. One of them, Miguel Baines, started up a romance with her. It was fun, but never anything special.

In 1736, when the gang was robbing a saloon, Lili recognized one of the girls as a pre-immortal. Reminded of her own beginnings in a similar tavern, Lili and the girl snuck away from the saloon. Her name was Rosa, and Lili began training her before she even died. Forming a sisterly bond, the two traveled across America to the East Coast. Rosa was caught in a duel and killed. Terrified when she awoke, she ran to Lili. Lili explained the immortality to Rosa, and the girl knew enough not to be scared of what she was. Training her for five more years, Lili left Rosa in 1745 and moved around the Americas for the rest of the century.

In 1803, Lili moved to New York City where she once again encountered Amanda. The two of them had a successful career as robbers together for two decades or so. In 1825, Lili moved back to Europe, settling in France. She found Methos in the south of France with Duncan. It was an awkward reunion, but the bond between her and Duncan was too strong. They resumed their relationship for another wonderful, blissful fifteen years. The murder of one of Duncan’s close friends sent him on a duty of revenge in 1840. It was dangerous and he did not want Lili involved. So, the two of them said their good-byes again, this time less painfully.

Looking up Methos, Lili traveled with him to London. They lived there, sometimes together, sometimes not, sometimes platonically, sometimes not for about twenty years. In 1859, she went back to the New World. Living in several places, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, Lili beheaded some immortals and befriended others.

Somehow, the news that the immortal Rosa Montenegro was killed reached Lili. Upset to hear of the death of her protégé, Lili went to Italy, where she had been killed.

One cold, ominous night, Lili’s life was forever changed. She was approached on the street by and immortal, obviously ancient, obviously evil. He revealed his name to her as Marcus Garou. The name was familiar to her….but how?

He was the duke that wanted to marry her when she was fifteen, in Paris. He knew she was pre-immortal and grew obsessed with her. It was he that burned down the estate, killing Mathieu. It was he who killed Zheoung Li. He, too murdered Lucien. In order to get Duncan to leave her, it was he who killed Duncan’s friend. And finally, to get Lili to him at last, he slayed Rosa, leaving an obvious track back to himself so Lili would find him.

Horrified at the thought of being watched all her life, Lili challenged Marcus. He simply laughed and refused. Warning her that anyone she grew close to would meet an untimely end, he proposed that she stay with him. Evil beyond all her beliefs, he was also powerful. In a fair fight, Lili could conceivably have beaten him, but he had vast resources of henchmen and black magic that would keep him protected for as long as he wanted to follow her.

Marcus promised her knowledge, power like his. Telling her all about the Watchers and the Hunters, Marcus told her that he was affiliated with both, and trusted by both groups. His plan was, ultimately, to wipe out all the other immortals and to have ultimate power – with Lili at his side. She declined furiously. Calmly, he left, leaving Lili an ominous warning about letting herself get close to anyone ever again.

That was in 1902. Since then, Lili has traveled the world, settling in America in the middle of the 20th century. She became affiliated with the hippie movement, relived her Crusades experiences in the Vietnam war, and beheaded countless immortals. As far as human contact went, she had a good amount of flings to keep her entertained, but she remembered what Marcus told her and never let herself get close to anyone.

In the 1970’s, Lili’s practice of Wicca became a bigger part of her life as she joined a coven for a number of years. Her immortality was too much for them, though, and she left in the early eighties. She decided to wipe out the Hunters that Marcus told her about. Successfully doing so to a great number of them, she made herself a considerable enemy.

She encountered Amanda, Methos, and Duncan numerous times since then. Painful as it was for her, she had to be cold to Duncan, pretending not to love him anymore. She did not want him killed by Marcus and his henchmen. As for Methos and Amanda, she spent a bit of time with each of them. After a few years of cat burglary with Amanda, she moved to California.

What Lili has done up until now is not known in detail. Currently, she owns a successful nightclub in New York City that she bought from Amanda in 2015. She is very much active in the Game now, killing considerable numbers of both Immortals and Hunters. However, ever since that fateful night in Italy, she has never been complete. She knows that Marcus has the capability to kill anyone, and the knowledge that she can never be with Duncan has left her lonely and withdrawn. She still has her share of flings with men, but it has been a long time since Lili has connected with anyone.

Nowadays, Lili’s name is instantly recognized by virtually any Immortal, Watcher, or Hunter. Many have heard of her but few have met her, so her reputation usually precedes her. Rumors of her beauty as well as of her skills in combat and of how lethal she can be have circulated widely and made Lili notorious. She is somewhat of a myth and a legend, a fact which amuses and frustrates her greatly. Lili has not sought such renown, nor does she relish it. All that she currently longs for is love and a connection with someone – namely, her lost love, Duncan MacLeod. It has been ages since Lili has had any measure of peace or contentment – and it is a rare occurrence indeed that she lets herself trust anyone.
