Richard Ryan was described in his youth as a goodhearted but implusive young man. He tended to leap into a situation without thinking firist, which often got him into trouble. However, over the years, Richie has developed his own code of honor patterned after his mentor's code of honor rather than falling back into the habits he learned on the streets. The years have shaped Richie into a wiser, less implusive and more honorable Immortal. One thing that hasn't changed with the passing of the years has been Richie's extreme loyalty to his friends.
Richie spent his childhood in an orphange, a mysterious foundling like most Immortals. He was a foster child for a time, but in his teens, he lived on the street as a thief. At 17, he broke into an antique shop owned by Duncan MacLeod and Tessa Noel. Instead of notifying the police, Duncan and Tessa took Richie into their home.
He lived with them in both Seacouver and Paris, changing from a petty thief into an educated young man. Upon his arrival to MacLeod's house, Richie witnessed a battle between two Immortals and a Quickening. MacLeod told him the truth about Immortals, not telling Richie that he would be Immortal one day.
In 1993, Richie and Tessa were shot by a junkie who was looking for drug money. Tessa died and Richie became Immortal, with Duncan MacLeod as his teacher. He left MacLeod after receiving his first Quickening and traveled through the United States. Eventually he became MacLeod's friend, not just his student. MacLeod regards Richie as a son.
In the late 1990's Richie lived in Paris, spending time with Duncan, Methos and Joe Dawson. In spring of 2000, he moved back to the United States, spending his time traveling and racing. In 2003, he became the lover of Davena MacRae, whom he had met in 1999 while on vacation in New York. Davena and Richie stayed together until 2007 when she suddenly left him.
Richie took the loss hard but eventually pulled himself together and decided to change his lifestyle. In 2008, he took a trip to India. It was a place he had always wanted to visit and although it did wonders for his soul, it reminded him of Davena. In 2009, he enrolled at Berkley and graduated in 2013 as a history major.
He currently lives in New York and Paris, working as a writer and part-time teacher. Racing is still his life and he spends every free minute at the race track. Richie now devotes much of his time and money to social work, helping kids with a past similar to his own. His heart still belongs to Davena as she has become his true love and he hopes to some day mend whatever wounds Davena may have had that caused her to leave him.
